The Viridescent One
The Viridescent One, Corruptor of Nature (Eldritch Fey, Warden of Withering Growth)
Role in the Cabal: The Viridescent One is a twisted fey, an embodiment of decay and aberrant growth who seeks to corrupt the natural cycles of life and death. Within Durnstang’s Cabal, the Viridescent One's role is to weaken nature’s intrinsic connection to the Great Weave, undermining the natural forces that sustain life and balance in the world. This fey creature turns the harmony of the natural world into a nightmarish parody of itself, bending the very forces of growth, life, and decay to sow rot, disease, and death. By doing so, the Viridescent One unbalances the Weave in ways that disrupt nature’s cycles, hastening the collapse of reality as Durnstang intends.
Background:
Long ago, the Viridescent One was a noble fey of Láude’s court in the Feywild, an archfey entrusted with the sacred duty of tending to the great wilds of Orsein. It was a creature of profound beauty, responsible for the flourishing of forests, the bloom of flowers, and the cycle of seasons. Its power was to guide life through the natural rhythms, ensuring that the balance between growth and decay was preserved. However, the Viridescent One became consumed by a perverse obsession with the concept of life eternal, seeing decay as a flaw rather than a necessary balance.
This obsession led it down a dark path. The Viridescent One sought ways to subvert the natural end of life, twisting growth into something perverse and unnatural. It began to experiment with unholy powers, corrupting the fertile land under its care, bringing forth monstrous plants, aberrant growths, and blights that twisted both flora and fauna into horrifying parodies of life. The once-beautiful fey became something else—its form now a grotesque fusion of plant, beast, and rotting flesh, exuding the smell of death and decay.
Láude, the god of nature, banished the Viridescent One from the Feywild, casting it into the deep wilds of Orsein. There, it lingered in isolation, its mind festering with hatred for the natural cycles it once cherished. It became an agent of corruption, a creature driven to twist the natural order and mock the beauty of life. This bitterness and its newfound connection to decay attracted the attention of Durnstang, who saw in the Viridescent One a perfect tool to dismantle nature’s hold on the Weave. By subverting the natural cycles, the Viridescent One could help create widespread imbalance, accelerating the unraveling of the Weave and hastening Durnstang’s ultimate goal.
The Viridescent One, now a key figure in the Cabal, eagerly assists in Durnstang’s plans, relishing the chance to destroy the natural balance that it once upheld. Its ultimate goal is to see the world transformed into a grotesque realm where life is distorted, death is delayed unnaturally, and nature is an unrecognizable landscape of mutation, rot, and eternal suffering.
The Viridescent One’s Motivation:
The Viridescent One is driven by a corrupted vision of immortality, seeking to dismantle the balance of life and death that governs the natural world. It views the Great Weave as an affront to the true potential of life, believing that nature’s cycles are a trap that force all beings into an endless loop of birth, growth, decay, and death. The Viridescent One’s goal is to break free from this cycle, creating a reality where life can persist eternally, even if twisted and corrupted beyond recognition.
Its hatred for the natural order manifests in its desire to see all life warped by rot and disease, with flora and fauna existing in a state of perpetual, distorted growth. The Viridescent One is especially interested in how the unraveling of the Weave will affect nature, knowing that as magic falters, the cycles it once upheld will also falter, allowing it to impose its own grotesque vision of eternal life upon the world.
Physical Appearance and Presence:
The Viridescent One’s form is an abomination of plant and animal features, a constantly shifting amalgamation of rotting vines, fungal blooms, and the skeletal remains of woodland creatures. It exudes a sickly green glow, like an unnatural phosphorescence that seems to rot everything in its presence. Towering and grotesque, its body constantly shifts, with new growths emerging and decaying in an endless cycle of sickly life. In battle, it commands both corrupted nature and terrifying swarms of insects, fungi, and blighted creatures, all of which reflect its power to twist nature into something monstrous.
When the Viridescent One moves through a forest, it leaves behind a trail of corruption—once vibrant trees twist into monstrous shapes, animals become grotesque, undead-like abominations, and flowers bloom with unnatural, deadly beauty, only to rot within moments. Even the air around it carries the stench of decay, and the ground where it treads blackens with necrosis.
Tactics and Abilities:
Aura of Corruption: The Viridescent One exudes an aura that causes all plant life within a large radius to rapidly grow, mutate, and decay. It can command these twisted plants to bind and attack its enemies. This aura also weakens natural healing and promotes disease and poison effects, making survival in its presence extremely difficult.
Rotting Growths: As a master of corrupting nature, the Viridescent One can summon massive, twisted trees, vines, and fungal growths to trap, restrain, and poison enemies. These growths can also serve as barriers or fortifications.
Blightcraft: The Viridescent One is a master of blight magic, able to summon plagues, spread fungal infections, and manipulate diseases. It can cause entire forests to rot, and its touch brings decay to living creatures and their surroundings.
Twisted Minions: The Viridescent One surrounds itself with corrupted nature spirits, blighted treants, undead animals, and swarms of insects that carry its corruption. It can summon these minions at will, overwhelming its enemies with an endless tide of corrupted creatures.
Warping Reality: In line with its role in unraveling the Weave, the Viridescent One can manipulate the fabric of reality itself, especially within natural environments. It can bend space, causing enemies to become lost in warped landscapes or shifting forests, making it difficult to navigate and fight.
Involvement in Durnstang’s Plan:
The Viridescent One’s purpose within the Cabal is to disrupt nature’s bond to the Weave, weakening the natural cycles that maintain life and balance. As nature falters, so too does the Weave’s stability, creating fractures that Durnstang can exploit to sever the ties between life and death. The Viridescent One works closely with the Maltherion, its blight and rot feeding the necromantic power of his undead armies.
While the other Cabal members may focus on mortal society or magical structures, the Viridescent One targets the land itself, ensuring that even nature is drawn into the apocalyptic spiral that Durnstang intends to unleash. The Viridescent One’s actions help bring the world closer to a state of primordial chaos, where life exists only as a twisted shadow of itself, paving the way for Durnstang’s final act of severing the Weave entirely.
